Fear and Procrastination

fear and procrastination

Fear and procrastination are common topics that come up often in my coaching conversations.

Fear especially can come in many forms and can really cause us to become stuck, which is no fun!

During a recent session with a client, I heard a lot of fear in her statements about the challenges she was facing with major dietary changes she was implementing.

Underneath all of that fear was a lot of sadness and grief because she feared losing friends due to these major changes she was making to improve her health.

What she was now choosing to eat didn't align with her old ways that her friends were used to, and she was scared of losing these important social connections.

This is such a common fear - one I hear often when coaching around health issues.  Some other examples of fear might include:

 We fear failure.

  • We fear the unknown - our life is currently so far from what we desire that we don't think it’s really possible.
  • We fear what we might lose in the process (like my client above who didn't want to lose her friends)
  • We think we would have to trade the dream for something else (friends, lifestyle, money, etc).
  • We simply fear change, which may call us into new and unfamiliar ways of operating or of “being”. Without familiar rules and boundaries, life might be uncomfortable and even unsettling.
  • We fear being different from others; it’s not the way most people live.

What comes up for you after reading through those? Since many of you might also be facing health challenges, what fears do you have about your health?

Sometimes we are not even aware that we are afraid of something. This culture in which we live does not smile on those who are weak or fearful, that's for sure!

In my coaching sessions, I help create awareness around one's current state, which may include a lot of fear.

Awareness and acknowledgment of fears are very important.  They are the first step to moving forward despite those fears.

When we see and understand our current state of being instead of hiding in the couch cushions pretending nothing is wrong, then we can more easily untangle and unwind what is happening in the present - and we are better able to choose another path.

What fears do you have, if any? I invite you to reply to this email, I would love to hear what's going on for you.
